Panagia Chrysospilaiotissa

The Convent of Panagia, dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos, is located to a short distance from the village of Gouriana. It got the name Chrysospiliotissa from the cave near which it was built, where, tradition has it, a golden icon of Panagia was found. According to an inscription, the present church was renovated in 1663. It is built in the architectural style known as “athonitikos” (three bays, i.e. three-sided conches). The narthex is a later addition. The frescoes inside the church date back to 1801. Quite remarkable is the wooden iconostasis with a beautiful floral decoration interwined with evangelical scenes and representations of animals and birds The icons of the iconostasis date back to the 19th century. Of particular interest are two old stone fountains that are close to the church and offer water to the pilgrims and visitors of this important monastery.

Panagia Vlachernon

It is located in the village of Vlaherna, opposite Arta, and took its name from the famous Panagia of Vlahernae in Constantinople. It was founded at the end of the 11th century and remodeled in the mid 13th century by Michael II Komnenos Doukas. Another jewel of the glory and religiousness of the sedulous Christians of Byzantine Arta. On the outside of course, the church does not reach the grandeur or decorative elegance of Agios Vasileios, but it has its own distinctive elements that make it, if not grandiose, nevertheless impressive. In the inside, time but also the unsuccessful human interventions have left their marks everywhere, so that it has lost a significant part of its old splendor. Near the western corners of the main church, there are two simple cist graves, which are the special feature of the monument. Today it serves as a parish church of the village, after which it was named.

Holy Monastery of Kato Panagia

The monastery was built in the 13th century by Michael Doukas Komnenos, Despot of Epirus. Today the monastery is kept alive thanks to the constant care of the nuns who live there. This great monument, built in a beautiful location, with a history and tradition that go beyond the normal boundaries of a monastery. It is currently an active convent for nuns and retains its initial splendor on the outside and its old mystic ambience in the inside. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos and it was named “Kato Panagia” in contradistinction to the big “cathedral” of Byzantine Arta, Panagia Parigoritissa. The internal orchard, which is the amazing "dressing" of the yard with lemon and orange trees, as well as flower beds and gardens, make the room a real "Garden of Panagia” and compensate visitors “treating” them with scents and a feeling of jubilation.

Church of Agia Theodora

The church of the patron saint of Arta and a pillar are the only salvaged parts of the monastery founded in the 13th century by the queen of the Despotate, Theodora. It was founded in honor of St. George and functioned as a convent for nuns. After the death of her husband, Theodora lived as a nun in the monastery, was buried there and the church is dedicated to her name. This temple is the most "live" connection of today’s Arta with the Byzantine Arta, since apart from the building, we have the "presence" of the Queen of the Despotate herself, the patron Saint Theodora. In the interior, the church retains much from its old sculptured and written decoration. To the left of the southern entrance lies the tomb of Saint Theodora. The tomb retains its old position but not its original form. It was remodelled in 1873 when the translation of the relics of the Saint occurred and it was then that its present appearance.

Panagia Parigoritissa

13th-century building founded by Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and his wife Anna Palaiologina Katakouzene It is the "lady" of today's Arta, the jewel of the once glorious capital of the Despotate of Epirus. It dominates over the densely populated slope of Peranthi hill, with its imposing presence being a reminder of the grandeur of Byzantine Arta. Today only the church, the Altar and 16 cells survive from the stavropegial monastery The church impresses with its external and internal architectural innovations, while the way of supporting the central dome, where the mosaic of the Pantocrator is preserved, is unique in ecclesiastical architecture. It is a unique example of Byzantine church architecture around the Orthodox Christian world. The many damages contributed to the church losing a big part of its old internal splendour, but its imposing grandeur has been preserved.
